Re: “Make wishes known for disposal of your remains,” John Poyser, Opinion, Feb. 17.
John Poyser wrote how Liza, who was not the executor, disposed of a friend’s body in 1872 by taking it from England and having it cremated in Italy. This wish had been expressed to her in writing by the deceased prior to his death. Liza expected the estate to pay for her “good deed” but was refused by a court because she was not the executor. Poyser stated, “It is a good idea, therefore, to pre-clear wishes with your immediate family.” Pre-arranging and discussing your funeral plans with your family is just as important now as it was 137 years ago. It will prevent confusion, questions and arguments among the survivors. It will also lower the stress level for your loved ones at a difficult time. Prepaying your funeral costs is also a wise move as it will lock in the cost of your funeral at today’s price regardless of when it takes place. If you wish to maximize the value of the estate you leave
