Family-Led Care

According to the Canadian Integrative Network for Death Education and Alternatives (CINDEA) caring for your deceased loved one at home is simpler than it may seem. The fact is for many centuries that is how the preparations following a death was handled.
  • Post-death care includes getting the body from the hospital or hospice (unless your loved-one died at home); washing and dressing the body; cooling it with dry ice or Techni-Ice/Cryopak blankets; making or buying a simple shroud or casket, and decorating it as you choose; putting the body into the casket or shroud; and then finally transporting it to a crematorium or burial ground.
  • After-death documentation
  • Embalming is usually not necessary, and in most places there is no legal requirement to make use of a funeral home.

Post-death Support

Death Doula's
End-of-life doulas empower, educate and encourage people and their families to be involved in making decisions. The word "doula" is Greek for servant or helper. A death doula supports a person during the dying process. In Alberta doulas cost between $700 and $1650.

The Cooperative Memorial Society of Alberta would like to acknowledge that what we refer to as Alberta is the traditional ancestral territory of a diversity of Indigenous peoples and home to Treaty 6, 7, and 8. We honor the Blackfoot Confederacy – Kainai, Piikani, and Siksika, the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stoney Nakoda, the Tsuu T’ina Nation and the Métis People of Alberta. This includes the Métis Settlements and the Six Regions of the Métis Nation of Alberta within the historical Northwest Métis Homeland. We recognize and give thanks to the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations, all who continue to grace these lands, and all future generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting.
