Organ Donation

Picture
In Alberta, hundreds of people are waiting for an organ or tissue transplant. One organ donor can save 8 lives and one tissue donor can enhance the lives of 75.

Since April 2014, more than 400,000 Albertans have registered their consent to be organ and tissue donors to help save the life or improve the life of another. But the waiting list is long. Many donors are needed.

Talk to your loved ones. It is important you discuss your wishes with your family and friends. They need to know about your choice, and that you want to help improve life for your fellow Albertans.

Albertans receiving or renewing their driver’s licence or ID card will be asked if they wish to register to be an organ and tissue donor. Interested individuals will now be able to add their name and donation choices to the registry.

What you need to know

The first priority of health care professionals is to save lives. Your choice to be a donor does not affect the quality of life-saving medical care you receive.

Everyone has the potential to be an organ and/or tissue donor, though you must be at least 18 to register your intent or consent to donate.

There will be no cost to your family or estate for the donation of your organs or tissue.

Organ and tissue recovery will only happen after every effort has been made to save your life.

Organ and tissue donation should not affect preferred funeral arrangements.
