About Us

The Co-operative Memorial Society (CMS) was formed in 1966 as a member-owned co-operative of like-minded people who respect the need for a simple, dignified alternative to the elaborate and increasingly costly funeral services promoted by the conventional funeral industry.

We are a non-profit, non-sectarian organization, operated by a 12-member volunteer Board of Directors. Members receive materials that help them to plan their wishes and record needed information.  We have a paid part-time Membership Services Coordinator and plan to add an Executive Director to manage our growing operations. Each year we host a special meeting for members by Zoom, distribute four email newsletters, and host a variety of presentations on different topics.

Members also have access to substantially-discounted prices for funeral services. Perhaps the greatest benefit of joining CMS is the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have planned for this part of life’s journey and have relieved your family or executor of the need to make difficult and potentially expensive decisions at a very stressful time.

The society was incorporated under the Alberta Co-operative Associations Act in 2004.

The Cooperative Memorial Society of Alberta would like to acknowledge that what we refer to as Alberta is the traditional ancestral territory of a diversity of Indigenous peoples and home to Treaty 6, 7, and 8. We honor the Blackfoot Confederacy – Kainai, Piikani, and Siksika, the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stoney Nakoda, the Tsuu T’ina Nation and the Métis People of Alberta. This includes the Métis Settlements and the Six Regions of the Métis Nation of Alberta within the historical Northwest Métis Homeland. We recognize and give thanks to the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations, all who continue to grace these lands, and all future generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting.
