Funeral Options

Plans with our funeral partners are structured to assist you in choosing a simple and dignified funeral plan at economical prices for CMS members. Your savings depends on plan and funeral home selected, as well as any additional services you want. Our families tell us they saved on average $2500 - $7500 and they are very grateful for the excellent service they received for their loved one(s).

CMS Member' plans

There are different plans available from simple cremation with no service to more elaborate burial services with viewing and service. Plans, services, inclusions and prices differ by each funeral home. Plans typically are based on the following:
Plan A1             Funeral Service with Burial
Plan A2             Funeral Service with Burial (Green Casket)
Plan B1             Basic Cremation with No Events
Plan B1-A          Basic Cremation with Private Farewell
Plan B2             Basic Cremation with a Funeral Service (Cremation prior to funeral event)
Plan B3             Cremation following Visitation and Funeral
Plan C               10% discount
Plans may be purchased at time of need or, prepayment of funeral plans is available from most of our providers pre-need. This is beneficial because your decisions are finalized and the plan is paid for at the current fee - potentially saving you more money.

What if I change my mind and don't want my prepaid plan or I want to change it ?

Prepaid plans can be cashed in for face value less an administration fee should you prefer a different option at a later date. This is regulated by the Alberta Funeral Services Regulatory Board (AFSRB).
Please contact the CMS funeral service partner of choice to prepay for your plan, to obtain more information, or to arrange services. No proof of membership is required as the funeral director has the ability to look up your membership information from our online directory.

Are there any other Fees?

While our basic plans are similar across our all of our service providers, the details of the plans differ based on our negotiated contract with each funeral home. For this reason it is important to discuss all services required costs up front and compare plans amongst from different providers.  Details for each plan with our service providers are listed here.
In addition to the funeral home plan price, a $35 records fee is collected by the funeral home upon plan payment and remitted to us (CMS). This fee helps to cover our administration costs. Our fees are kelp low because we operate as a volunteer-led board of directors who do most of the work in our spare time. We have one paid part time membership services coordinator.

Final Arrangements Booklet

We produced a booklet in 2012 to provide basic information to help members with planning their final arrangements. While some information is older, we include it here for your reference. Keep in mind, some information may have changed.

The Cooperative Memorial Society of Alberta would like to acknowledge that what we refer to as Alberta is the traditional ancestral territory of a diversity of Indigenous peoples and home to Treaty 6, 7, and 8. We honor the Blackfoot Confederacy – Kainai, Piikani, and Siksika, the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stoney Nakoda, the Tsuu T’ina Nation and the Métis People of Alberta. This includes the Métis Settlements and the Six Regions of the Métis Nation of Alberta within the historical Northwest Métis Homeland. We recognize and give thanks to the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations, all who continue to grace these lands, and all future generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting.
